Prague. The Centre for Efficient Transport (CEDOP) welcomes the aims mentioned in the State of the Union by the President of the USA, Barak Obama. The aims are related to high-speed Internet implementation and high-speed railway construction.
We are underdeveloped nowadays
Our infrastructure used to be better, however we have lost our leading position, said the president Obama. Similarity is obvious: in times of The First Republic the express train Slovenská strela managed the distance Prague – Bratislava in 4 hours and 18 minutes, the average travel speed was 92 km p.h. Within 74 years the speed has been increased just by 13 km p.h.
While in Europe altogether 6637 km of high-speed railways work, more than two thousand are being built and more than 8000 are planned. In the Czech Republic no railway like these have been ever built, there is no decision made for the future1..
Energy security
The reasons for the development of high-speed railways are obvious: high transport capacity, safety and environmental freindliness. “The president Obama wants to lower the dependence of the USA on oil and fossil fuels as such: high-speed trains run on electricity which can be produced by carbon-free technologies. “, expains Petr Šlegr from the Centre of Efficient Transport.
Competitive advantage
The Centre for Efficient Transport appreciates the latest news by the Department of Commerce2 dealing with competitive advantage of the Czech Republic and positively evaluates the fact that the document identifies similar key areas of development as the president Obama in his news.
“In the Czech Republic is frequetly mentioned the intensity of the inherited railway network, which shows the competitive strenght of our infrastructure in the same way as the amount of black and white Tv sets placed in attics relates to the modernity and stylishness of Czech households.“, says Petr Šlegr. He adds: “I think that it is the highest time for the Czech Republic to follow its ally in terms of safety and inspire with the ally´s strategic planning in transport infrastructure.“
